Joseph Serar joins SKW as Director of Education

Joseph Serar named Director of Education

June 1, 2017, Sacramento, CA — Stafford King Wiese Architects (SKW), an architecture and planning firm, is excited to announce Joseph Serar, AIA, IIDA, LEED AP, as the new Director of Education.

Joseph has built his 30-year career serving clients from a variety of market sectors throughout California, with a strong emphasis in education planning and design. As the son of an architect, Joseph’s passion and mentoring for this profession began early in life, listening to his father talk about the impact a school’s design has on a student’s learning, and ultimately life, is what left the strongest impression on Joseph.

As Director of Education, Joseph leads the studio’s corporate strategic growth initiatives, business development, client/industry partner relationship cultivation and oversight of contracts and resource allocation.  Joseph is focusing on business development for all education market sectors as well as providing oversight on current projects with UC Davis, Sacramento City USD and Twin Rivers USD. He provides leadership to projects for community college and university clients and works closely with Christopher Garcia, Director of K-12 Education.

Joseph’s management style is centered on leading by example. He establishes clear expectations, provides his staff necessary resources, encourages constant communication, and believes every opinion has merit.
“I value the diversity of the team.  It is the recognition of each other’s strengths–a true collaboration and integration of the design team, the client and the builder that define a projects successful outcome.”

Some of Joseph’s notable projects prior to joining SKW include: a 2-story classroom building, lecture hall and offices for Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business & Management; a 2-story science lab and lecture hall at La Sierra University; and the new Orange Vista High School with a STEM/health career focus for Val Verde Unified School District.

Joseph’s passion for education architecture extends into teaching. He is a former adjunct professor at Chaffey College for their interior design program, and enjoys mentoring others as they develop their professional path. Joseph is an active member of the Coalition for Adequate School Housing, Association for Learning Environments, Society of College and University Planning and the AIA Central Valley Chapter. Additionally, Joseph is a LEED Accredited Professional through the U.S. Green Building Council.
